British Pathe are of course synonymous with the birth of the moving image, its roots lying in 19th century Paris and the work of Charles Pathe. But our film archive also documents the development of still images with photographers at work popping up in all sorts of reels over the last 100 years.
In this gallery you will see many classic and vintage cameras. There are 1000s in the archive so we've selected cameras that look interesting or tell a story. Halfway through the gallery we switch to colour photography and television equipment.
However, we are no expert in this field - so if you're a keen photographer and reading this gallery please do get in touch with us if you have information to add. Anything from camera makes and types, purposes, advantages and disadavantages. We'd love to hear from you.
Enjoy the gallery!

I know nothing about the make of the camera in the top left, but the "AR TV" markings signify that the cameraman is working for Associated Rediffusion.

This appears very much like a Braun Paxina with an additional range finder. Very similar to one my father had, and I played around with when younger!!

Number 36 looks like a member of the Leica II family with a 50mm f3.5 Elmar collapsible lens.

Number 36, as it says on the 'box' an Ashai Pentax Spotmatic, with a fair sized lens and Pistol grip.
