Spike had Irish citizenship thanks to his father's birthplace and being made a stateless person by Great Britain. And on his gravestone the epitaph is in Gaelic (Irish): 'Duirt me leat go raibh me breoite' because the diocese of Chichester where he was buried (St Thomas's Church, Winchelsea) didn't think it was appropriate, so the family reached a compromise. Typical Spike - a joke most people can't read. He'd have liked that.
After typing In very hesitantly Fred Roper I was amazed at the photographs that came up on screen. My first in laws were actually part of Fred's midget act and the photograph of them in a line at the midget town is one I have in my own possession. I also have in my possession pictures taken in Africa and America and various other destinations. My father in law was the strong man of the troupe. My mother in law's sister was also part of this amazing act.
This is an area of entertainment that is lost in time. As a family were lucky enough to have hilarious tales of their adventures.
