Execution by Firing Squad
This sombre image shows a man surrounded by a firing squad in a disused quarry. Coffins lie in wait to one side. It is taken from some unsettling footage which shows spies being led to their final destination by the US Military Police. The events took place just outside the town of Braunschweig, Germany in 1945. Two of the spies were in fact Hitler youths and were just 16 and 17 years old.
Firing squads are normally composed of several people and they are instructed to fire simultaneously. This prevents the identification of the member who fired the lethal shot.
