Background: King Gustav of Sweden and the three Swedish Princesses attended the presentations of Nobel prizes on Dec 10 - the anniversary of Nobel's death.
To Professor Donald A. Glaser of California University USA, went the award for Physics. The award for medicine went jointly to Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet of a Melbourne research Institute, Australia, and Dr Peter Brian Medawar of London University, UK, for their work in experimental biology.
Professor Willard F.Libby of California University, USA, received the Nobel award for Chemistry; and the prize for literature went to Saint-John Perse, the French poet.
Each Nobel prize this year is worth GBP15,585. In addition to a cheque for this amount, gold medals and diplomas were presented. After the ceremony, there was the traditional Nobel banquet in Stockholm City Hall. And on Dec 11, King Gustav and Queen Louise gave a banquet for the prizewinners and their wives in the Royal Palace.
