Background: In Dakar last Friday (April 30), Senegal's President Senghor visited an exhibition arranged by the Taiwan Chinese Agricultural Mission. The mission has been at work in Senegal since 1964, and its first experiments have been aimed at improving the quality of the country's rice crop. They have, for instance, introduced a new rice culture into Guede, in the Central Valley.
President Senghor arrived at the exhibition in the afternoon, accompanied by his Minister of Rural development and other government officials. He was greeted by Mr. Kung, Director of the Taiwan Mission's experimental establishment, where this exhibition was held, and Senegal's representative from Taiwan. Under Mr. Kung's direction, the party toured the displays of agriculture.
The President was also shown the establishment's terraced gardens, which, complete with pagoda, have been built to resemble Chinese style gardenscaping.
