Background: A near-perfect performance was registered by the winning dog and handler in the Welsh National Sheepdog Trials in Wales, Britain, recently.

SYNOPSIS: Sheepdog trials in Britain are over a hundred years old. There roots were, and still are based on the practical side of handling sheep - most of the dogs are working animals, and most of the handlers are farmers or shepherds. This year's Walsh National was taken by Alan Jones and his dog in a near-perfect demonstration of good sheep handling.

Running sheep is a skilled business -- both for the dog and its master -- involving complicated herding of sheep through and around several obstacles, and finally into pens. The handler controls the dog by whistle commands -- and the pair are judged on the response of the dog to his master, and his ability to herd the sheep precisely with the minimum amount of agitation. This victory in the singles event was Mr. Jones fifth in Welsh trials.
