Background: Thousands of people took to the streets in Calcutta on Sunday (Dec 12th) to show their support for the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Gandhi and for Sheikh Mujib - the imprisoned leader of the Bangladesh movement.
The occasion was "Bangladesh Day" which was celebrated throughout the Indian state of West Bangal which adjoins the country now recognised by India as Bangladesh.
Many of the demonstrators carried large portraits of Mrs. Gandhi and Sheikh Mujib - while others chanted or sang their support for Bangladesh.
While the celebrations went on, centres were opened in several parts of Calcutta to receive donations of blood to be sent to wounded Bangladesh victims of the war.
