Background: LABIS, SOUTHERN MALAYA, WHERE 30 INDONESIAN COMMANDOS ARE ALLEGED TO HAVE DROPPED AT DAWN ON WEDNESDAY. THIS AREA IS ABOUT 100 MILES (160 KILOMETRES) SOUTH-EAST OF KUALA LUMPUR, THE MALAYSIAN CAPITAL, AND IS SURROUNDED BY RUBBER PLANTATIONS, HILLY JUNGLES, AND SWAMPLAND.

WHEN NEWS OF THE DROP WAS GIVEN MALAYSIAN FORCES RUSHED TO THE AREA AND ARE REPORTED TO HAVE KILLED FOUR INDONESIANS AND CAPTURED FIVE. LATER, THE MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY WITH REGULATIONS AMOUNTING TO MARTIAL LAW. AND IT WAS ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) THAT TWO BATTALIONS OF BRITISH COMMONWEALTH TROOPS WERE PREPARING TO GO INTO ACTION AGAINST INDONESIAN INFILTRATORS ON THE MALAYAN MAINLAND. THESE UNITS WILL RELIEVE MALAYSIAN FORCES BEING TRANSFEREE TO SINGAPORE WHERE RIOTING HAS BROUGHT SEVERAL DEATHS.

BRITISH GURKHA TROOPS ARE NOW IN THIS AREA TRYING TO HUNT OUT THE REMNANTS OF THE INDONESIAN FORCE. NEW ZEALANDERS ARE EXPECTED TO GO TO PONTAIN WHERE ABOUT 100 INDONESIANS LANDED IN AUGUST. FROM THIS GROUP 18 HAVE SO FAR BEEN REPORTED KILLED AND MORE THAN 50 CAPTURED.

MALAYSIAN HAS ACCUSED INDONESIA OF "BLATANT AND INEXCUSABLE AGGRESSION" IN THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL. INDONESIA HAS DENIED THE CHARGE. THE INDONESIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY SAID YESTERDAY THAT THE HERCULES TRANSPORT PLANE WAS CARRYING DANCING GIRLS BACK TO CAMBODIA AND NOT PARATROOPERS TO MALAYSIA.
