Background: SOVIET PRIME MINISTER ALEXEI KOSYGIN TODAY (WEDNESDAY), TOURING ONE OF BRITAIN'S LEADING COMPUTER PLANTS, BROKE AWAY THE OFFICIAL PARTY TO SHAKE HANDS WITH OFFICE GIRLS AND FACTORY WORKERS. JOSTLED BY PHOTOGRAPHERS AND ANXIOUS SECURITY MEN, A SMILING MR. KOSYGIN WALKED CAREFULLY ACROSS A FLOWER BED TO GREET A CHEERING CROWD OF SOME 2,500 WORKERS.

MR. KOSYGIN'S HANDSHAKING SESSION FOLLOWED AN HOUR-LONG TOUR OF ELLIOT-AUTOMATION LIMITED AT BOREHAMWOOD, NORTH OF LONDON. AMONG THE EQUIPMENT THAT CAUGHT HIS EYE WERE A COMPUTER SOLD TO RUSSIA FOR USE IN ITS CENTRAL PLANNING SYSTEM, AND A MICRO-MINIATURE COMPUTER THE SIZE OF A SHOE-BOX. HE ALSO SAW DISPLAYS OF SOME OF THE EQUIPMENT BEING MADE BY THE FIRM FOR THE ANGLO-FRENCH CONCORDE AIRLINER.

THE SOVIET LEADER WAS GIVEN A PRESENTATION SET OF CUFF-LINKS, INSCRIBED WITH THE WORDS "WELCOME ALEXEI NIKOLAYEVICH KOSYGIN" IN LETTERS SO SMALL HE HAD TO READ THEM WITH A MICROSCOPE. AFTER THE TOUR HE TOLD COMPANY CHAIRMAN, SIR LEON BAGRIT, AND OFFICIALS: "I THINK A GOOD BASIS EXISTS FOR OUR TRADE AND TECHNICAL CO-OPERATION." THIS IS A FOLLOW-UP TO HIS SUGGESTION YESTERDAY THAT BRITAIN AND RUSSIA GET TOGETHER FOR JOINT ECONOMIC PLANNING AND TECHNOLOGICAL CO-OPERATION TO BOOST MUTUAL TRADE.
