JONES: "To those who would love to see a leadership crisis in this party as the results of a debate on the Common Market, there is no leadership crisis. Harold Wilson isn't in danger. Because I believe we're going to have a united party against the Common Market this week and Harold Wilson will continue to lead the party on that basis."

JENKINS: "How can the leader, or anyone else, be expected to be convincingly in favour of entry one year; against the term the next; and against the principle the third. I therefore attach considerable importance to the outcome of the debate on Wednesday morning. I don't think it calls into question the position of the committed European, of those of us who were firmly in favour of entry last year, and will continue to be so. We will continue to fight our corner within the parity, accepting for the time being that our position is a minority one."

Background: The British Labour Party's annual conference opens in Blackpool, in the north of England, on Monday (2 October) with its attitude to the key question of entry into the European Economic Community still in the balance. It was almost certain to be the main topic of the Conference.

For the Party leader, Mr Harold Wilson, the issue represents a great personal test, but by the eve of conference he had overcome a major hurdle, having the National Executive agree to propose to Conference that a future Labour Government should renegotiate the terms of entry.

The National Executive decided also to oppose a strongly-worded motion calling on a Labour Government to withdrew immediately form the Common Market.
