Background: Dar as Salaam University College, previously a constituent part of the University of East Africa, gained its academic independence at the beginning of July. Yesterday (Monday), Tanzanian Education Minister Chediel Mgonja visited the college a the start of its first year of academic independence.

The two other colleges making up the East African University -- at Nairobi and Kampala -- have also become independent this year.

Dar es Salaam University College was originally built with the help of British and West German aid. Facilities include an excellent observation and a swimming pool.

Mr. Mgonja toured the campus with the new college Vice Chancellor, Mr. Pius Mzekwa, formerly executive secretary of the ruling TANU party.
