Background: Visnews filmed Feb 18 at the East railstation, Vienna, the arrival of 150 Jewish refugees from Rumania on their way to a new life in the ten-year old republic of Israel.
Emigration of Jewish from Rumania began last Summer. So far some 7000 have left for Israel. They each carry only 25 kilograms of belonging.
As the train drew into the platform, men, women, children, clutching parcels, suitcases, craned out of the carriage windows searching for relatives or friends. If there were none there, the knowledge that they might be with their own people shortly helped dispel any disappointment. Israel was ready to welcome them.
Israel's plans for large-scale immigration of Jews from Eastern Europe during the next few years drew this week complaints from the Arab world.
The Arab arguments are: 1. That for Israel to admit 100,000 new immigrants this year and possibly 3M in the near future, while denying repatriation to 1M Arab refugees, constitutes defiance of the United Nations. (Ten years ago the U.N. ordered Israel to take back refugees who wished to return).
2. Jewish immigration represents a threat to the peace of the Middle East for Israel in doubling its population strengthens its military potential and will seek border expansion to the detriment of Arab neighbours.
The Egyptian propaganda machine turned this week against the Soviet Union - the nation that is injecting men and money into the precarious economies of Mid-Eastern nations. The issue: The Soviet Union is blamed for encouraging Jews to leave Communist countries. The United States is also attacked: for financing the emigration.
