MR PATMAN: "I think it has something to do with the Watergate, because there's generally a loss of confidence over the world in our government because of this Watergate case where one party is trying to assassinate another party."



REPORTER: "If the Watergate mess goes on and on, what will happen to the dollar?"



PATMAN: "Well, I don't think it will affect the dollar, except in currencies and the valuation of currencies, between the countries of the world. But I won't expect any more than that, the loss of confidence would be reflected in our dealing with other countries in regard to peace and the settlement of difficulties -- Vietnam, the Middle East and things like that. Some people are only against our country because we have so much dissatisfaction here including the Watergate and other things and they don't trust our leadership like they did."

Background: In New York on Tuesday (15 May), Mr Wright Patman, Texas democrat and chairman of the powerful House of Representatives Banking Committee, said that the sinking dollar value was connected with the Watergate affair. He said that there was also a loss of confidence in the United States government all over the world.
