Background: King Hassan of Morocco's bullet-riddled 727 Boeing aircraft was shown to journalists in Rabat today (Friday). The jetliner was hit at least 17 times by cannon and machine-gun fire during Wednesday's (August 16) abortive attempt on the King's life by a group of Air Force officers who strafed the aircraft as the King was flying home from a private visit to France.
The damage was serious and extensive, and it is surprising that it did not provoke a crash of the aircraft. The engines were riddled with holes, the exhaust flume had two jagged holes the size of oranges, a huge hole destroyed the port-side wing flap, the whole upper part of the tail section was very badly damaged, and the fuselage showed holes to the front of the port side engine - just behind the place where King Hassan was sitting.
Reports indicate that the King was uninjured but suffering from shock.
The pilots who carried out the attack fled by helicopter to Gibraltar, but it has been announced in London today (Friday) that they would be repatriated to Morocco tomorrow (Saturday) at the request of the Moroccan Government. General Mohammed Oufkir, the Chief of the Moroccan Armed Forces, is reported as having committed suicide during the night of August 16-17, and is said to have been implicated in the assassination plot.
