Background: Film stars from 11 Asian countries were in Saigon on Saturday for the 5th Vietnam Kotion Picture Festival. Before a large crowd at the Rex Theatre, actors, actresses and producers arrived to attend the festival's opening ceremony. The three-day event, the biggest ever to be staged in Saigon, was sponsored by the motion picture industry of South Vietnam.
Taiwan sent a large delegation to the festival. Among the 18 Taiwanese stars present was the actress Yen Chen, whose films have boen box-office hits throughout Asia. The popular Shaw Brothers actress, Li Ching, was also there, representing Hong Kong.
Altogether 62 film stars attended this year's ceremony. Aside form Taiwan and Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand also sent delegations. During the three-day festival, the various participants were escorted on sightseeing tours, and visited several film locations in saigon. Their schedule also included a tour of Bien Hoa and Binh Duong where film sots are constructed, and a courtesy call on President Thieu at the Independence Palace. The festival ends today (24 September) with a press conference and a farewell dinner given by the vietnamese film industry.
