Background: The special British government envoy now in Nigeria, Mr. E. C. Norris, yesterday (Thursday) conferred with the head of the Nigerian Military Government, Major General Gowon in Lagos.
Mr. Norris is an assistant under-secretary responsible for West African Affairs in the British Commonwealth Relations Office. He is visiting Nigeria for a series of meetings with British diplomats and Nigerian government officials.
At the talks between Mr. Norris and General Gowon was also Mr. Edwin Ogbu, the permanent secretary in the Nigerian Ministry of Externa Affairs.
Mr. Norris is understood to have given Major General Gowon a detailed account of the British government's concern over recent developments in Nigeria and the secession of Eastern Nigeria, now using the title 'Republic of Biafra'.
General Gowon spent some minutes giving the British envoy and the British High Commissioner in Lagos, Sir David Hunt, an account of events leading to Eastern Nigeria's secession from the federation.
