Background: POLICE WERE ON FULL ALERT IN CALCUTTA, CAPITAL OF WEST BENGAL, ON THURSDAY (MARCH 19) TO GUARD AGAINST POSSIBLE VIOLENCE DURING THE CELEBRATION OF A MOSLEM RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL. THIRTY-TWO PEOPLE HAVE DIED AND HUNDREDS HAVE BEEN INJURED IN WEST BENGAL, WHERE THE COLLAPSE OF THE STATE GOVERNMENT HAS LED TO A MAJOR POLITICAL CRISIS.

TROOPS WERE PATROLLING THE STREETS OF NAIHATI, 50 MILES FROM CALCUTTA, WHERE A CURFEW HAS BEEN CLAMPED ON THE TOWN - SCENE OF BITTER CLASHES BETWEEN RIVAL POLITICAL FACTIONS.

POLICE STOOD BY READY TO DEAL WITH POSSIBLE RELIGIOUS STRIFE AS MOSLEMS PARADED THROUGH CALCUTTA TO CELEBRATE THE TRADITIONAL MOHARRAM FESTIVAL. THE PROCESSION WAS OVER TWO MILES LONG. MOSLEMS, CARRYING FLAGS AND PAPER FLOATS, CHANTED RELIGIOUS SLOGANS AS THEY MARCHED THROUGH THE CITY STREETS, WATCHED BY THOUSANDS OF ON-LOOKERS. BUT POLICE FEARS OF POSSIBLE MOSLEM-HINDU CLASHES PROVED UNFOUNDED.

THE PARADE FOLLOWED A WAVE OF CLASHES LASH TUESDAY (MARCH 17) IN A MARXIST-LED GENERAL STRIKE TO PROTEST AGAINST THE BREAK-UP OF THE 14-PARTY STATE COALITION GOVERNMENT. THE CRISIS WAS PRECIPITATED BY THE RESIGNATION OF THE CHIEF MINISTER, MR. AJOY MUKHERJEE, WHO ACCUSED THE MARXISTS - DOMINANT PARTNERS IN THE COALITION - OF INSTIGATING "A REIGN OF TERROR".

HOME-MADE BOMBS, GUNS AND KNIVES WERE USED IN INTER-PARTY CLASHES IN A NUMBER OF WEST BENGAL CENTRES FOLLOWING THE GOVERNMENT'S DOWNFALL.

A NUMBER OF PEOPLE DIED IN NAIHATI DURING THE POLITICAL VIOLENCE, AND RESIDENTS WERE ORDERED TO STAY INDOORS DURING THE CURFEW WHICH FOLLOWED.

IN THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS, WEST BENGAL HAS BEEN PLACES UNDER DIRECT PRESIDENTIAL RULE AND THE STATE LEGISLATURE SUSPENDED. CALCUTTA WAS REPORTED QUIET, BUT FEARS WERE EXPRESSED IN SOME QUARTERS THAT THE MARXISTS WOULD OPPOSE PRESIDENTIAL RULE WITH RENEWED VIOLENCE.
