Background: INTRODUCTION: In Dakar, Senegal on Monday (3 January) the Senegal "Lionesses" basketball team brought joy to their supporters when they beat Egypt 88 points to 56 to win the finals of the African Women's Basketball Championships.
SYNOPSIS: The Demba Diop stadium was packed and towards the end of the second period it was already clear that the Senegalese girls in the dark strip had the edge on their opponent. But it was by no means a walkover. The Egyptian team worked some clever points themselves, despite the solidity of the "Lionesses" defensive play.
The start of the third half -- and an unusual failure by the Senegal team, whose accuracy and speed has taken them through the championships in fine style. However, the final lived up to expectations, with the Senegal girls usually well in control of the ball and most of the time outpacing the Egyptians--though the Senegalese where lucky to escape on this occasion.
Most sporting events in Africa take on a carnival atmosphere--and this game was no exception. An understandably partisan crowd cheered on their heroines, who were gradually building up an overwhelming lead.
Egypt on the attack -- and some smart footwork from their goal-scoring front line produced some shocks for the Lionesses. With the score at 70 to Senegal and 38 to Egypt the match looked like a foregone conclusion -- but the Senegal team sensibly maintained their attacking play and retaliated with characteristic enthusiasm. But the Egyptian girls were not to be intimidated and were eventually awarded a penalty after some confusion around the goal area.
Three tries at the goal for Egypt -- and a score. But they are trailing now and as the game moved towards its closing stages it was obvious that the Senegal team had the upper hand.
Pushing home their advantage Senegal scored during the final moments of play -- a triumphant finish for them that delighted the home crowd.
A well deserved victory for the Senegal Lionesses -- duly appreciated by their supporters. The Senegal newspaper "Le Soleil" said of the match that the Lionesses win was the logical outcome of their dedication to the game. A proud moment for the Lionesses Captain as she receives the African Women's Basketball Championships cup for 1976/77.
