Background: Civil rights groups in New York City protesting discrimination against negroes and Jews allegedly practiced by the New York Athletic Club demonstrated at the Club's annual games on Friday (16 Feb.)
Militant negro leader Rapp Brown and 2000 protestors were supposed to halt the New York Athletic Club Games at New York City's Madison Square Garden. Spokesmen for the demonstration said no Negroes would participate.

The games went on with nine negro participants. About 500 demonstrators picketed outside the Garden, but they never got past the police lines that met them at every door. The demonstration was orderly except for a few scuffles until demonstrators tried to rush an entrance. Club swinging police moved in and stopped them short. A few demonstrators were injured and some were arrested. About 10 PM chanting negro and white pickets were broken-up by police and herded away from Garden entrances. They shouted and swore when police moved them back, but they did not resist.

Spokesmen for the protesting groups said earlier in the day that they had bought 2000 tickets. At an appointed time the ticket holders were to rush en masse from the stands onto the track and lie down. Despite the spokesmen's predictions no one lay on the track. Negro athletes participated, and Rapp Brown never appeared. But demonstration leaders claimed their protest was successful. They pointed out that only a few negro athletes broke their boycott and entered the competition.
