Background: The annual mid-winter swim - with temperatures below zero - gets under way in the Arakawa River, Tokyo, today, with about 70 Japanese children and youths participating in the spartan sport.

A crowd of shivering spectators watch the swimmers wade into the river and swim for a distance of 25 metres. As soon as the course is covered they all make a dash for the cheery bonfire.

This annual event is designed to develop the physical and spiritual fortitude of the children. If they survive this they can survive almost anything!!!
