Background: There were emotional scenes at the funeral in Cairo on Thursday (11 March) of the Coptic Orthodox Patriarch, Pope Kyrillos the Sixth, who died on Tuesday (10 March) aged 69. The Patriarch had headed the 15 million members of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Arab Republic and Ethiopia for 12 years. President Sadat was represented at the service by his Prime Minister, Dr Mahmoud Fawzi, while Emperor Haile Selassie sent his Imperial Court Minister. Frenzied Mourners pushed forward to touch the coffin as Pope Kyrillos was buried near the relics of Saint Mark, who took Christianity to Egypt in the year 42 A.D. Pope Kyrillos brought the martyr's relics back to Cairo from Venice about two years ago.
