Background: On Friday (23 April) ecologists and cyclists gathered outside the Paris UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation) building to start a 12 day marathon. The group of about ten men and women, ages ranging from 20 to 70 years are cycling to the Swedish capital, Stockholm. They have become known as the "Green Shirts" because of their uniform tee-shirts which are decorated with the emblem of the United Nations Programme for the Environment. They were farewelled by the Director-General of UNESCO Amadou Mahtar M'Bow. Their leader Georges Krassovsky has organised ecology marathons since 1975 in an effort to make the public more aware of the destruction of the environment and the need for peace. The cyclists are expecting to be joined en route by ecology supporters from northern France, Belgium, the Netherlands, West Germany and Denmark. Their arrival on June 5 will celebrate the opening of the tenth United Nations Conference on the Environment which will be held in Stockholm from June 5 to June 16.
