Background: In Dar-es-Salaam yesterday (Sunday) President Julius Nyerere, took the salute and said farewell to the last members of the force of 600 British marine commandos who were flown into Tanganyika last January to keep the peace following the mutiny of the Tanganyikan Army.

He told the soldiers that Tanganyika was bidding them farewell "with grateful thanks for their service to the Republic."
Then President Nyerere presented the marine's commanding officer, Colonel Carter, with a statue of a Masai warrior carved in ebony. On behalf of the company, Colonel Carter gave the Tanganyika President a plaque bearing the emblem of the Royal Marines.

After the official ceremony President Nyerere invited the soldiers into the State House for refreshments where he thanked many of them personally for the work they'd done.
