Background: Engineers from seven countries who export cars to Japan have been given a practical demonstration of strict new anti-pollution measures which will soon be required on vehicles imported into Japan.
On Friday (30 May) thirty-one engineers from the world's top 19 automobile exporters gathered at the Government Testing Station at Mitaka near Tokyo. They took photographs and detailed notes as Japanese engineers pointed out just where on exhaust systems measurements would be made to determine the heat output of the system.
The new heat pollution regulations are complex and for this reason the engineers attended the three-day briefing sponsored by the Japan Automobile Importers Association.

The heat regulations are new and arise from the equipment required to inhibit gaseous emissions. The catalytic converters and other devices required to control these, produce heat and the Japanese are now worried that this new source of heat could damage the car and the environment.
The foreign engineers found that several square feet (about one square metre) of fire-protective heat-dissipating sheet metal will be required.
This could cause problems for makers of sports care -- popular on the Japanese market -- because there is little room under their lowslung bodies to fit the new protective devices. The device will also cost a lot to design and instal.
Last year, just over 31,000 cars were imported into Japan, mainly from the U.S. and Europe. In the same period Japan exported nearly 3,000,000 cars, trucks and buses to the rest of the world and the same number of motorcycles.
