    GERALD FORD TRANSCRIPT:

"I think Mr. Nixon should do as he has done: indicate as clearly as he can that he's innocent and that he is going to carry the case to the ultimate authority which is the Congress of the United States."

REPORTER: "What do you expect the mood to be in the Congress? Do you know these peoples? How do you expect it all to go?"

FORD: "I really can't tell you. It will be a very hard decision for many people. Every Democrat in the final analysis voted for the article. Number two: I would only observe that the House Committee on Judiciary in the last three or four years had not truly represented the House of Representatives as a whole. The Committee has been upset, the Committee has been overturned in the House on some other issues. It could conceivably a overturned on this one."

Background: United States Vice-President Gerald Ford came out in support of President Nixon on Saturday (27 July) -- one hour after the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee voted to recommend President Nixon's impeachment.

Mr. Ford called a press conference outside his home near Washington. He said President Nixon should continue to argue his innocence and raised the question as to how well the House Judiciary Committee represented the Congress -- "the ultimate authority" in the United States.

Some of his answers to reporters' questions are transcribed here.

Vice President Ford would automatically assume office if President Nixon were impeached.
