Background: A petition containing thousands of names and stretching 1,300 metres (yards) was unfurled on the streets of Geneva on November 11 to link the embassies of the United States and the Soviet Union. The petition, signed by thousands of children from Belgium and West Germany, was organised by the West German peace group "Peace Bird". The petition was a protest against the siting of nuclear missiles in Europe and called on the two superpowers to find a way to peace and nuclear disarmament.
