Background: A MASS RALLY ABOUT HALF-FILLING THE 100-THOUSAND CAPACITY MAIN STADIUM IN DJAKARTA ON SUNDAY, JUNE 14, MARKED THE END OF A WEEK-LONG PREPARATORY CONFERENCE TO ARRANGE A SAFRO-ASIAN ISLAMIC CONFERENCE. THE CONFERENCE IS TO BE HELD IN BANDUNG, INDONESIA, BEGINNING DECEMBER 17, 1964.

THE MAIN OBJECTS OF THE CONFERENCE LAID DOWN BY THE DJAKARTA PREPARATORY CONFERENCE, WILL BE TO INTENSIFY THE SOLIDARITY OF ISLAMIC COUNTRIES AND ENLIST THEIR SUPPORT FOR WHAT INDONESIA CALLS THE "NEW EMERGING FORCE". INDONESIA, A SPONSOR OF THE PREPARATORY CONFERENCE DRAFTED A FIVE-POINT PLANT, INCLUDING SOLIDARITY OF ISLAMIC NATIONS BASED ON THE PRINCIPLES OF THE 1955 AFRO-ASIAN POLITICAL CONFERENCE HELD IN BANDUNG; OPPOSITION TO IMPERIALISM AND NEW-COLONIALISM; JOINT STRUGGLE WITH THE NEW EMERGING FORCES AGAINST THE OLD ESTABLISHED FORCES, ISLAMIC MISSIONARY ACTIVITY, AND JUSTICE FOR MOSLEMS IN THEIR OWN COUNTRIES.

ONLY 6 COUNTRIES SENT DELEGATES TO THE DJAKARTA CONFERENCE, TWO OF THEM -- THAILAND AND PHILIPPINES -- COUNTRIES IN WHICH MOSLEMS ARE ONLY A SMALL MINORITY. OTHER WERE IRAQ, SAUDI ARABIA, UAR, AND PAKISTAN. THE CONFERENCE'S POLITICAL OBJECTIVES WERE INDICATED IN AN OPENING MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT SUKARNO WHO SAID ISLAM HAD KNOWN ITS MOST PROGRESSIVE DAYS FROM THE 7TH TO THE 13TH CENTURIES, BUT SINCE HAD FADED UNDER THE DOMINATION OF COLONIALIST AND IMPERIALIST FORCE. HE ADDED: "AS ISLAM LEADERS IN THE 20TH CENTURY, WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLACE OURSELVES IN LINE WITH THE RISING TIDES OF THE AFRICA AND ASIA REGION."
