MRS. GANDHI: "For the rest we have to find a new life style, as I have been saying this is not that I am against any particular civilization, but we have rather blindly followed the industrial patterns set by certain advanced nations. Now does that pattern suit India? Can we ever eliminate poverty or bring about or lessen disparity if we follow that pattern. This is the major question which today is arising in the minds of everybody even in the highly industrialised countries. But for us it is even more relevant because it is at a stage of development when it is easier for us to give a fresh look, so I would hope, I would like to quote my favourite prayer to you, that I don't say there should be less difficulty in seventy-four but let us have the courage to face whatever difficulties may come with cheerfulness and good humour. I think India has passed through many dark periods and unfortunately among some sections of the Press there is a great deal of cynicism but we face the most tremendous challenges that any country or any people have ever faced.

Background: The Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi called on her people to look for a new life style and face difficulties with good humour and cheerfulness when she gave a Year's Eve press conference in Delhi on Monday (December 31).

In a review of world and domestic affairs Mrs. Gandhi vigorously defended her country's recent economic agreements with the Soviet Union but rejected any immediate resumption of diplomatic relations with Pakistan.

It was the Indian Premier's first news conference for 20 months.

She said the agreements with the Soviet Union would in no way impinge on India's non-aligned policies nor its independence in judging international issues.

The agreements were of mutual benefit to India and the Soviet Union and India would equally welcome offers of help from the United States.

I'm much of her speech Mrs. Gandhi dealt with India's economic difficulties and the fierce criticism from her political opponents of inflation and shortages of essential items.
