    Background: SANTIAGO, CHILE

Chile's soccer champions, Universidad Catolica, moved into the second round of the Libertadores Cup with a convincing victory over Bolivian champions Bolivar by three goals to one in the Santa Laura stadium, Santiago, on May 13. In front of a crowd of 12,000 spectators, Universidad went into the lead in the 15th minute when Osvaldo Hurtado was lucky to score from the penalty spot. He hit the ball straight at Bolivar keeper Battaglia, who had, fortunately for Hurtado, chosen already to dive to the right. After 29 minutes Bolivar themselves were awarded a penalty and Erwin Romero needed no luck to plant his kick firmly in the corner to bring the scores level. Any threat to the Universidad defence ended there, the Chileans scoring twice more in the first half to put the game beyond doubt. In the 36th minute a good piece of advantage play by the Colombian referee after a deliberate handling allowed Miguel Neira to score a neat goal from a backheel pass. Four minutes later a free kick taken by Osvaldo Hurtado cannoned off the Bolivar wall and ended up at the feet of Ramon Isasi, who took his chance well and made the margin for Universidad's victory the only remaining question. Despite pressure in the second half the Chileans failed to lengthen their lead and finally ran out winners by three goals to one.
