Background: Power-boat racing...and Billy Seebold of the United States took England's coveted Duke of York trophy for the second year when he won the open Formula One event around twenty-five laps of the Bristol Docks on Sunday (10 June).

SYNOPSIS: Grand Prix power-boat racing has been held at Bristol docks for seven years. The Bristol meeting is recognised as one of the top powerboat events and attracts drivers from all over the world..
The climax of two days' racing was the Duke of York trophy, and American Billy Seebold was favourite to repeat his victory in 1978. Another American, Seebold's team-mate Earl Bentz broke the lap record in practice and led the race from the start.

But Bentz who had engine trouble earlier in the afternoon lost the lead to Billy Seebold. Seebold is one of the most successful Formula One drivers in the world and has set forty-four speed records in US national and world competition. He was driving a craft of his own design, powered by a new outboard motor making an impressive racing debut.

Billy Seebold continued to set the pace, and beat off a challenge from Italian driver Renato Molinari - also in a boat of his own design. Seebold won the Duke of York trophy for the second year. Team-make Earl Bentz fought back to make it a one-two for the Americans.
