Background: On Saturday (February 24), Sheikh Mujibur Rahman flew in to Lahore International Airport to attend the Islamic Summit Conference.
When he arrived, the Pakistani Guard of Honour fired a twenty-one gun salute and a band played the Bangladesh national ??? them as the Bangladesh flag was raised. An embrace from Pakistani Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto symbolised the final recognition of Bangladesh as an independent country. It marked the end to two years of bitterness that followed the breakaway of Bangladesh from Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistan war, Sheikh Mujibur was returning to the country that held him prisoner for nine months until January 1972. Behind him stood General Tikka Khan, the man who commanded the army in the then East Pakistan when Sheikh Mujibur was arrested. It is thought that in return for Pakistan's recognition of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur will forego the trial of 195 Pakistani officers Bangladesh is holding on war crimes charges.
Sheikh Mujib arrived at the conference a day late. He had refused to come without Pakistani recognition. He was warmly received by the representatives of the thirty seven countries attending the conference.
