Background: SIXTY-FIVE YEARS AGO ON NOV 5, CARS WERE AT LAST ALLOWED TO USE THE ROADS OF BRITAIN WITHOUT A PEDESTRIAN WALKING IN FRONT. AS USUAL, THE ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB HELD ITS ANNUAL LONDON-TO-BRIGHTON RUN TO MARK THE OCCASION, AND TEN THOUSAND PEOPLE SAW THE START IN HYDE PARK.

OVER 220 VETERAN CARS STARTED, ALL BUILT BEFORE 1905. THE OLDEST TOOK PART IN THE ORIGINAL RUN 65 YEARS AGO: THE ONLY ONE PRESENT TO DO SO. IT WAS ALSO THE FIRST CAR EVER SEEN IN THE IRISH REPUBLIC, WHERE IT WAS REGARDED AS THE DEVIL'S CREATION.

FIFTY-EIGHT MILES TO BRIGHTON - AND ALL SORTS OF HAZARDS WAITING, MOSTLY MECHANICAL, LIKE THE IGNITION TROUBLE THAT STOPPED ONE CAR TWENTY TIMES. THERE WAS A TERRIFIC RECEPTION FOR THE OFFICIAL UNITED STATES ENTRY, AND 1890 "HAYNES APPERSON", WHICH THRILLED ITS OWNER BY GETTING THROUGH. USUALLY, HE SAID, IT GETS TIRED AND GIVES OUT AFTER SIX MILES.

AT BRIGHTON, A HUGE CROWD WAITED ON THE PROMENADE TO CHEER THE CARS. THE EVENT IS NOT A RACE - EVERY DRIVER WHO FINISHED IN THE SET TIME GETS A COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL FROM THE R.A.C. THIRTEEN OLD CARS WERE UNLUCKY AND DID NOT FINISH THE COURSE. FIRST TO ARRIVE WAS A 1901 "PROGRESS", OWNED BY A BRITISH CAR ENTHUSIAST.
