Background: North of Saigon yesterday (Wednesday), heavy communist pressure continued on a wide area around Xuan Loc -- key to the South Vietnamese capital's northern outer defence line.
The Saigon command said its forces still held onto the city of Xuan Loc itself and had extended their zone of control around the city with operations like this one from the village of Pau Giay, 10 miles west of Xuan Loc.
South Vietnamese rangers, Supported by artillery and air strikes, consolidated their positions from the village along Highway one towards Xuan Loc.
The battle in the Xuan Loc area has been going on for ????than a week now with Communist forces reportedly making several thrusts into the city itself only to be repulsed each time. To some military observers, it appeared the South Vietnamese might make Xuan Loc the focul point of a drive back north to recover lost ground --- or at least hold firm at Xuan Loc.
