    Background: BOMBAY, INDIA

Six people died when a five storey building collapsed in Bombay on August 5. The following day, firemen and volunteers worked together to recover the bodies of those who died. Twenty two people were temporarily trapped in the wreckage before being rescued. The building, which housed mainly commercial offices with some residential apartments, collapsed onto a nearby railway line. Two of the four tracks were closed and local city services were disrupted for some time before the lines were cleared. One eye witness said that only minutes before the building fell, a local train had passed along the track. Vehicle traffic was also disrupted as falling masonry broke up the surface of the road over the railway bridge. The 15-year-old building was declared unsafe by the Bombay authorities five years ago, but no repairs were carried out, despite repeated council notices. One local resident told a Bombay newspaper that the building's architect was called to inspect cracks in the wall several hours before the collapse. Rescue workers were still hard at work on August 6 clearing away the wreckage.
