Background: THE KING QUEEN OF MALAYSIA, THE YANG DI PERTUAN AGONG AND THE RAJA PERMAISURI AGONG, CONTINUED THEIR TOUR OF SARAWAK IN EASTERN MALAYSIA WITH A VISIT TO THE CHINESE TOWN OF SIBU, ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY MILES NORTH OF KUCHING, THE CAPITAL, ON NOVEMBER 25.

THE ROYAL COUPLE WAS GREETED ENTHUSIASTICALLY BY THE MALAYS AND THE IBANS, THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF SARAWAK, BUT THERE WAS SOME RESTRAINT IN THE RECEPTION FROM THE LARGE CHINESE COMMUNITY.

SIBU IS A CENTRE OF CHINESE ANTI-MALAYSIA FEELING AND LEFTWING POLITICS AND THERE WERE VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS THERE WHEN A UNITED NATIONS MISSION VISITED SARAWAK LAST YEAR TO DECIDED WHETHER THE PEOPLE OF BORNEO WANTED TO JOIN MALAYSIA.

THROUGHOUT THE TOUR, MARKED BY STOPS AT KAMPONGS (VILLAGES) WHERE THEY MET COMMUNITY LEADERS AND IBAN CHIEFS, THE ROYAL COUPLE WAS CHEERED AND SHOWERED WITH YELLOW RICE IN A TRADITIONAL MANNER.

EXCEPTING FOR THE CHINESE, THE OTHER RACIAL GROUPS -- MALAYS, IBANS AND INDIANS -- STAGED OFFICIAL WELCOMES. IBAN MEN AND WOMEN DANCED FOR THE ROYAL COUPLE. TRADITIONAL PEACE OFFERINGS WERE MADE, AND AS A TOKEN OF GOODWILL AND WELCOME MALAYSIAN INDIAN GARLANDED THE ROYAL COUPLE.
