Background: THE ISLAND OF SINGAPORE, WITH A POPULATION OF MORE THAN A MILLION, HAS BEEN DECLARED A CHOLERA-INFECTED AREA.

THE DISEASE BROKE OUT (MAY 18) IN A DENSELY-POPULATED VILLAGE IN THE HEART OF THE ISLAND AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS FROM THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT QUICKLY IMMUNISED THE REST OF THE VILLAGERS.

THE VICTIM AND TWO OTHER SUSPECTS ARE IN HOSPITAL UNDER CLOSE OBSERVATION.

IN ADDITION TO THIS, ONE HUNDRED OTHER PEOPLE ARE ALSO UNDER OBSERVATION. THEY ARE NOT CONSIDERED TO BE CHOLERA CASES CLINICALLY.

ALL OF THEM HAVE EITHER SUFFERED FROM VOMITING OR DIARRHOEA. THEY WILL BE RELEASED AS SOON AS CHECKS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.

IN STEPPING UP THEIR ANTI-CHOLERA CAMPAIGN, THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT HAS SET UP THIRTY-FOUR IMMUNISATION CENTRES THROUGHOUT THE ISLAND.

SOME THIRTY-FIVE HEALTH OFFICIALS HAVE COMPLETED PUMPING ABOUT TWO THOUSAND POUNDS OF CHLORINE INTO BIG FISHING PONDS IN THE VILLAGE WHERE CHOLERA FIRST BROKE OUT.

A GOVERNMENT STATEMENT RELEASED RECENTLY STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC AND INDIVIDUAL HYGIENE TO HELP PREVENT THE SPREAD OF THE DISEASE.

THE STATEMENT FURTHER URGED THE PEOPLE TO PROTECT THEMSELVES BY IMMEDIATE IMMUNISATION AND THAT STOCKS OF VACCINE IN SINGAPORE ARE SUFFICIENT TO IMMUNISE EVERY MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC.

    MOBILE CLINICS ARE VISITING SCHOOLS.

TO DATE, SOME 415,000 PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY BEEN INOCULATED.
