Background: The Lebanon's two state radio stations were re-unified on Monday (12 December) under an Information Ministry scheme.

SYNOPSIS: The stations -- Amchit and Radio Beirut -- both operate from the Lebanese capital. Amchit aired rightist views during the 19 month civil war while Radio beirut gave air time to the leftists.

On Monday, both stations began broadcasting the same programmes. This will become standard procedure for Amchit and Radio Beirut. In future they will share all programme preparations.

The new Lebanese Premier and Information Minister, Selim al-Hoss said unification of the official media was one of his top priorities. The two stations will be under the joint control of two men - Ramez Khazen and Radwan Mawlawi.

Under the new scheme, the stations will steer away from politics and work toward lifting the morale of the Lebanese people. Educational programmes will be back on the air as soon as possible, news bulletins and light entertainment programmes are already being aired.

M. Selim al-Hoss said the unification of "information must come before the general unification of the country." "We must have one radio, one commentary and one source of information," he said.
