TRANSCRIPT: REPORTER: SIR, COULD I ASK YOU A QUESTION. WHEN DID IT BECOME EVIDENT THAT THE MILITARY SITUATION WAS DETERIORATING VERY RAPIDLY?

MAN: PERSONALLY, I GOT ORDERS FROM THE RED CROSS HEADQUARTERS THAT AFTERNOON, AROUND FOUR O'CLOCK, THAT I WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE THAT NIGHT.

    REPORTER: THIS WAS FRIDAY.

REPORTER: DID THIS COME AS A SURPRISE?

MAN: IT DIDN'T, BECAUSE THAT MORNING WE HEARD THE POSITION WAS COLLAPSING. IN OUR AREA THERE WASN'T MUCH CHANGE, MAYBE A FEW MORE REFUGEES HAD BEEN IN AND THE BOMBARDMENT OF ULI THAT NIGHT WAS PERHAPS A BIT HARDER THAN IT HAD BEEN.

REPORTER: WHAT WAS THE KEY FACTOR THAT LED TO THE COLLAPSE OF RESISTANCE, DO YOU THINK, IN TERMS OF MORALE?

MAN: OF COURSE WE DON'T KNOW, BUT THE AUTHORITIES HAD LOST SOME OF THE BEST FOOD GROWING AND BEST CASSAVA GROWING GROUNDS AND SOME OF THE WOUNDED WE GOT IN FROM THE FRONT TO THE HOSPITAL, THEY HADN'T EATEN FOR FIVE. FOUR OR FIVE DAYS THEY SAID. AND THEY WERE ALMOST EXHAUSTED, STILL VERY HUNGRY.

REPORTER: WHAT WERE YOU DOING IN BIAFRA?

MAN: I WAS MAKING ARTIFICIAL LIMBS (INDISTINCT) ABOUT 12 HUNDRED PEOPLE WERE NEEDING ARTIFICIAL LIMBS AND I JUST STARTED A FACTORY FOR IT BECAUSE I WAS TRAINING THE BIAFRANS IN DOING IT.

MAN: ON THEY LEFT, THEIR MORALE WAS COMPLETELY BROKEN, THEY WAS JUST SINGING SONGS, THEY WERE JUST WAITING FOR THE NIGERIANS YOU COULD SAY. BUT I THINK WHEN THEY REALLY COME THEY WOULD GO FOR THE BUSH.

Background: A NORWEGIAN RED CROSS WORKER WHO ARRIVED IN PARIS TONIGHT FROM BIAFRAN SUGGESTED THE BIAFRAN MILITARY COLLAPSE COULD BE THE RESULT OF LOSING VALUABLE FOOD GROWING AREAS. THE NORWEGIAN, WHO HAD BEEN WORKING IN A SURGICAL CENTRE MILE (TWO KILOMETRES) FROM ULI AIRSTRIP, ARRIVED WITH TWO OTHER RED CROSS WORKERS -- A NORWEGIAN WOMAN AND A DUTCHMAN.

ALL THREE WERE ORDERED OUT OF BIAFRA BY THE RED CROSS. THEY SAID THE ONLY RELIEF WORKERS LEFT BEHIND WERE THE SEVEN OR EIGHT FRENCH RED CROSS PERSONNEL WHO HAD REFUSED TO LEAVE 250 CHILDREN IN THEIR CARE.

THE NORWEGIAN MAN, WHO DECLINED TO BE IDENTIFIED, SAID SOME OF THE WOUNDED HE HAD TREATED HAD NOT EATEN FOR FIVE DAYS. HE SAID THE ORDERS TO LEAVE CAME AS NO SURPRISE.

THE DUTCHMAN, JOOP GEHRISS, SAID THAT WHEN HE LEFT ON STURDY, THE BIAFRANS WERE JUST SITTING DOWN AND SINGING....THEIR MORALE WAS COMPLETELY BROKEN. MR. GEHRISS WORKED IN A REHABILITATION CENTRE TRAINING BIAFRANS IN THE MANUFACTURE OF ARTIFICIAL LIMBS.
