Background: Austrian star racing driver, Jochen Rindt, snatched a dramatic last minute victory over Australia's Jack Brabham in the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch today (July 18).
Rindt, driving a Lotus, stormed past former World Champion Brabham just before the finishing line when the Australian ran out of fuel.
Brabham had to be content with second place.
Rindt's win puts him even further ahead in the World Championship Driver's table. But there was a trackside drama before Rindt's win was confirmed. The Austrian, having been feted as the victor, was later disqualified by officials on the grounds that his car was fitted with illegal aerofoils. But two-and-a-half hours later stewards examined the car once more and decided that, after all, it did conform with the regulations. Rindt was reinstated as the winner.
Rindt, who put up the fastest time in practice to give him pole position, led for most of the race until Brabham swept past him in the final stages and seemed certain of victory.
But for the second time this year, Brabham had to watch helplessly as Rindt swept past him to win. The first was in the Monte Carlo Grand Prix.
Brabham had recorded the fastest lap time during the race at an average speed of 111.06 m.p.h. (178.6 k.p.h.).
The 24-year-old Austrian driver leads Brabham by 36 points to 25 in the championship table.

From the start this Grand Prix was a duel between Rindt and Brabham. Eighty laps, 212 miles (340 kilometres) with average speeds well above 100 m.p.h. (161 k.p.h.). Rindt, who had put up the fastest time in practice, led for most of the race. But Brabham, driving brilliantly, recorded the fastest lap time during the race at an average speed of 111.06 m.p.h. (178 k.p.h.). But for the second time this year Brabham had to watch helplessly as Rindt swept past him to take the chequered flag. With certain victory in sight Brabham had run out of fuel.
Rindt's win put him even further ahead in the World Championship Driver's Rable. But at Brands hatch there was still more dream. The Austrian, happily receiving a triumphant reception, was disqualified on the grounds that his car was fitted with illegal aerofoils. Brabham was declared winner.
But later, after officials had once more examined Rindt's car, they reversed their disqualification decision and reinstated the 24-year-old Austrian as the winner. The win meant valuable Championship points to Rindt who now leads Brabham by 36 points to 25.
