Background: President Houari Boumedienne of Algeria laid the foundation stone Friday (September 15) of a model agricultural village to be built near Bouira, in Kabylia, in north-eastern Algeria.
The village is the third of 1,000 planned under the President's "Agrarian Revolution" land reform programme.
President Boumedienne also handed to 50 peasants title deeds on plots of farmland owned by the State, which they will work under a co-operative system.
The next stage of the Agrarian Revolution - signed into law last November - is a nationwide census of private farm land. Under the programme, land of absentee landlords and all farms over 12 1/2 acres will be nationalised and re-distributed to peasants grouped in co-operatives.
