Background: Floods wrecked property and communications in Southern Italy Nov 25 after heavy falls of rain and hail.

Servicemen, police and firemen from unaffected towns and cities in the North sped to the flood areas - in particular to the towns of Reggio di Calabria, Metaponte, Catanzaro and Cosenza - to help in relief work.

Farmlands lay under rising water, many families were homeless. In Catanzaro, torrential rain put the streets under three to four feet of water in some places. In Cosenza, 35 miles to the North, some 2,000 people were reported evacuated from their homes.

Pope John celebrating his 78th birthday that day, ordered speedy Vatican relief to the victims, and donated an undisclosed sum to aid funds.
