Background: INTRODUCTION: Hundreds of military vehicles have been arriving at the Egyptian port of Alexandria in preparation for joint Egyptian-American military exercises due to begin on Saturday (14 November).Code-named "Operation Brightstar 82", the exercises will test the readiness of the American Rapid Deployment Force to meet any sudden emergencies. It will also provide valuable training for Egyptian forces in using American equipment.

SYNOPSIS: By late Wednesday (11 November), more than 2000 American paratroops and infantrymen of the Rapid Deployment Force had arrived in Egypt.More were pouring in all the time.By the time Operation Brightstar begins on Saturday, 4000 American troops will be in position, matched by 4000 Egyptians. An American Commander listed his force's equipment.

The military vehicles arrived on the American transport ship Cygnus after a two-week voyage across the Atlantic from Savannah, Georgia.Along with M-60 tanks and M-113 Armoured Personnel Carriers were 115-milimetre field guns and self-propelled howitzers. After arrival they moved to Egypt's Western desert, causing the closure to civilian traffic of one of Egypt's main highways.

Operation Brightstar will last for two weeks. It will include parachute drops, artillery and infantry exercises, and bombing runs from B-52 aircraft, which will fly direct from the United States, refuelling in mid air.The manoeuvres are intended as proof of President Reagan's commitment to friendly Arab states. They have been strongly criticised by radical Arabs, including the Palestine Liberation Organisation. But President Hosni Mubarak said the exercise were for training purposes only.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Similar, but smaller, exercises are planned for the Sudan, Somalia and Oman.
