Background: Cambodian and South Vietnamese military authorities on Thursday flew to the Cambodian border village of Bopol to investigate an outbreak of fighting between their troops.

Reports said a Cambodian civilian and South Vietnamese soldier were killed in the fighting, which took place about seven miles inside the Cambodian border in Takeo Province.

The joint team was accompanied by the American military attache in Phnom Penh, Colonel Harry Amos, who said he was invited by the Cambodian Government as an observer.

The Cambodians said the village had not been deliberately mortared by South Vietnamese after shooting broke out between troops from the two countries. At least two houses were destroyed and seven others damaged.

The South Vietnamese, blaming the incident on misunderstandings, said they thought the village was occupied by the Viet Cong.

While the team carried out its investigations, Cambodian officers explained the situation to the villagers.
