Background: More than 26,000 people have been killed in the past two years in the undeclared civil war in El Salvador between left-wing guerrillas fighting to overthrow the ruling junta and troops backed by right-wing groups.Recently, though, guerrilla efforts have been aimed more at strategic targets such as bridges, power-pylons and factories.

SYNOPSIS: This was the Las Canas bridge 16 kilometres (10 miles) north of San Salvador. The bridge was blown up early on Thursday (26 November). To ensure the success of their raid the guerrillas threatened peasants living near the 80 metre (87.5 yards) bridge with death if they reported guerrilla activity in the area.

People came from San Salvador and the surrounding countryside to see the extent of the damage.

The bridge id the third biggest in the country.Guerrillas had attempted to blow it up before but had failed.

There was no problem this time.Experts say it will cost at least two million dollars to replace the 50-year-old structure which spans a particularly deep ravine. There were no reported casualties in the attack. At the beginning of the month (november) guerrillas destroyed a bridge on the main road linking San Salvador with provincial towns. And just after this film was shot about 40 guerrillas set fire to the supports of a railway bridge west of San Salvador. They were later repaired by the State Railway Company.Meanwhile, hundreds of troops were heading for the south eastern province of San Miguel.Guerrillas were reported to have attacked peasants there for refusing to join them.
