Background: The Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, attended an "anti-dowry" rally in New Delhi on Thursday(25 March) and told the crowd attending that the practice of a dowry was a bane on Indian society.

More than 200 young people from the Delhi University and the Lady Hardinge Medical College attended the rally.

The young people at the rally -- both boys and girls -- took an anti-dowry pledge before Mrs. Gandhi.

The Prime Minister told the young people that although they had taken the anti-dowry pledge it would be much harder to follow their convictions once they had left their studies and returned home.

Mrs. Gandhi urged the students to stand up for what they believed in even if it meant disagreeing with their parents.

SYNOPSIS: The Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, attended an anti-dowry rally in New Delhi on Thursday.

The rally was attended by more than 200 young men and women from the Delhi University and the Lady Hardinge Medical College.

Some elderly women were also there. But it was the young men and women who came forward to take the anti- dowry pledge before the Prime Minister. The pledge forms, signed by the students, were given to Mrs. Gandhi. Mrs. Gandhi told the students that the practice of giving a dowry was a bane on Indian society.

The Prime Minister told the students that although they had taken the anti-dowry pledge it would be much harder for them to follow their convictions on marriage once they had left their studies and returned home.

Mrs. Gandhi said that the students should attempt to change their families' attitudes towards the practice of a dowry. The Prime Minister told the students to stand up for what they believed in, even if it meant disagreeing with their parents.
