Background: Scottish bantamweight Billy Rafferty lost on points against Piero Rollo, the Italian champion, in a non-title bout over 15 rounds at Cagliari, Sardinia, Oct 30. The win makes Rollo eligible to meet Alphonse Halimi, world bantamweight champion (E.B.U. version), for the world crown.
Rafferty fought swiftly, opening with vigorous body attacks, but found the champion warded them off with jabs and swings. Then Rafferty tried fighting at a short distance and in the fifth round managed, through persistent two-fisted attacks, to embarrass Rollo.
Rafferty enjoyed his best rally in the 12th round, catching Rollo with three rights to the head and to the left eye and then pommelled him with a two-fisted attack. But Rollo was to win at least ten of the 15 rounds on the scoring card of referee and judge Risoto Martos of Spain. Winner and loser had slight cuts around the left eye but neither appeared to be hampered by the injury.
