Background: Six hundred years ago the first great rebellion in English history took place, the Peasants Revolt. Led by Watt Tyler, the peasants fought against the high taxes of Richard II. Yesterday, (August 31) the people of East Thurrock, Essex, donned the clothes of 1381 and marched in memory of their forefathers. The cry this time was for "more social amenities for the young."
The marchers collected signatures from motorists and spectators for their petition to the East Thurrock Council, and the money they collected will go to an appeal fund for thalidomide victims.
