Background: The notorious noise of steel against steel has been one of the main irritations of railway travel since its inception. But the German Bundesbahn have found a way to reduce the whirl and grind of the wagon wheels by 50 per cent.
Here in Osterholz, the railway authorities have equipped a special train with grinding wheels of their own design and manufacture to smooth the lines to mirror-smooth flatness.
The train is seen leaving Osterholz station at about two miles an hour for a day's work of ten miles 'track-smoothing'. It is equipped with an electrical supply sufficient to light a city of 20,000 people. The train itself is electronically controlled.
With its specially trained crew of 20, the track-smoothing special is bringing safe and silent travel to thousands of grateful Germans.
