Background: Crown Prince Mohammed of Jordan inaugurated Dec 10 the new deep-water port of Akaba - Jordan's only shipping outlet to the Red Sea through the Gulf of Akaba. The port was built by British loans by British and German firms.
First to arrive was the British ship Hansen. Shortly afterwards, the Crown Prince arrived by an aircraft of the King's Flight and accompanied by Prime Minister Hassa Majali drove to the port to unveil a commemorative plaque. Later the Crown Prince toured the new docks. The Crown Prince was representing King Hussein on a European holiday.
The capacity of the port will not at first be great but in full operation it will be a major factor in helping the hitherto landlocked country to attain commercial viability.
Other factors aimed at regenerating the country: plans to widen the tourist trade and increase agricultural produce today providing the bulk of foreign earnings.
