Background: The Peruvian foreign Minister, General Edgardo Mercado Jarrin, has been visiting Brussels this week to build up contacts between his country and the European Common Market. His schedule yesterday (Wednesday) included talks with officials led by the community's Director-General of External affairs, Herr Sigrist. The visit is seen as part of the increasing internationalisation of Peru's outlook.

Last month, Peru was invited to send an envoy to Brussels for discussions aimed at building up contacts between the South American country and member stages of the European common Market. The Peruvian foreign Minister, General Edgardo Mercado Jarrin, has been in Brussels this week for exploratory talks with officials of the community.

On Wednesday, the Peruvian Minister had talks with high level officials of the European community, led by the Director-General of External Affairs, Herr Sigrist. Peru has been looking increasingly towards Europe in an effort to broaden its international links. Belgian and British companies have recently been competing to finance mining development in the country.
